ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT:
You can view this file at any time by typing the following commands at the DOS
prompt:
C:<ENTER> (Substitute for 'C' the drive where the program is installed)
CD \EZPRO<ENTER>
README<ENTER>
This file contains current and important information about EZ MIDI Pro that you
should know before using the product.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
INSTALLATION AID:
There is a program included on the system diskette called CHECKOUT.EXE. This
program exists to help determine whether or not your computer has the required
amount of memory, and whether that memory is XMS, extended, or expanded memory.
To run CHECKOUT, type the following:
A:<ENTER> (Substitute for 'A' the drive you used to install the program)
CHECKOUT<ENTER>
CHECKOUT is also copied to the hard disk when you install EZMIDI Pro. To run
from the hard disk, type:
C:<ENTER> (Substitute for 'C' the drive where the program is installed)
CD \EZPRO<ENTER>
CHECKOUT<ENTER>

NOTE: If you are having problems with QEMM v6.x, check your CONFIG.SYS file
to see if the parameter ST=M or ST=F is specified. This is the QEMM Stealth
option, which attempts to relocate BIOS addresses to free up high memory.
Stealth is a non-standard method of organizing memory and many clone PCs have
problems with this option. Using the expanded memory option in conjunction with
QEMM with Stealth enabled will usually cause EZ MIDI Pro to malfunction. There
are three methods to combat this problem:
A. Exclude video ROM and floppy BIOS from being relocated by Stealth, i.e.:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM ST=F X=C000-C7FF X=FC00-FFFF
B. Switch EZ MIDI Pro to use extended memory (see CONFIGURE on the FILE
menu).
C. If "A" and "B" does not work, remove the "ST:" option from the line
"DEVICE=QEMM386.SYS" in your CONFIG.SYS file and reboot the computer.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
MQX-32/MQX-32M OWNERS: Please note that EZ MIDI Pro is designed to use the rev-
ision 18 or higher EPROM. This version of the EPROM has support for CLS and SMPTE
synchronization in UART mode. If your system hangs when you select the MQX-32/
MQX32-M interface, it is due to to an older version of the firmware. Contact
Music Quest at (214) 881-7804 to obtain a EPROM update for your interface.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
WINDOWS 3.x NOTES:
Due to the heavy usage of XMS memory by EZ MIDI Pro, EZ MIDI Pro requires a
80386/80486 with at least 4 megabytes of actual installed RAM to operate
satisfactorily under Windows 3.x. (80386 Enhanced mode swap files of any size
do not count). EZ MIDI Pro can play in the background, however note that the
music may speed up, slow down, or stop completely when Windows switches to other
tasks.
===============================================================================
IMPORTANT: We require that if you plan to use EZ MIDI Pro with Windows, you
configure EZ MIDI Pro to use extended/XMS memory.
===============================================================================
Be aware that some MIDI interrupts from your MIDI interface may get lost while
recording, meaning some MIDI information will not be recorded. This problem
does not affect playback however. When you are playing or recording under
Windows 3.x, make sure that EZ MIDI Pro is running in a full screen DOS
session. See the documentation that came with Windows 3.x for more details.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NOTES ON UPDATES:
When you receive an update for EZ MIDI Pro, the following steps should be taken:
A. Determine that a previous version of EZ MIDI Pro is installed on your
hard disk. If not, Install the most current version you own.
B. If you have selected Expanded memory (EMS) as your memory configuration,
switch back to extended memory. Exit the program back to the DOS prompt.
C. Put the update diskette in drive A: (or B:).
D. Type:
A:<ENTER> (Substitute for 'A' the drive where the update diskette
resides).
INSTALL<ENTER>
E. After the update is completed, you can run EZ MIDI Pro. If you had prev-
iously selected EMS (see step B), select CONFIGURE from the FILE menu
and reselect EMS as your memory configuration.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NEW FOR 1.22: Check out the new screen colors (for EGA and VGA only)!
A LOCATION feature (on the GOTO menu) enables you to store up to 16 cue points
for quick recording or playback.
The FILTERS (RECORD) feature has been expanded to 14 MIDI event types.
Note that the FILTERS (PLAYBACK) function was removed from the CONTROL MENU.
Improved support for Windows 3.1 (MIDI interface drivers are more compatible
with the DOS box).
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NEW FOR 1.21: Concurrent song loading from song lists! The next song in the
song list or the next song you select using the OPEN option from the FILE menu
can be loaded while another song is playing.
Controllers can be mapped to other controllers using the REMAP CONTROLLERS op-
tion on the EDIT menu.
The settings for VU METERS and DESCRIPTIONS are now global instead of being
saved on a per song basis.
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
NEW FOR 1.20: Song tempos are now calculated to 1/100th of a beat. This is known
as "fractional tempos". Changes have been made throughout EZ MIDI Pro to use
fractional tempos, including FILTER, SCALE, TEMPO, and TAP TEMPO functions.
Fractional tempos can be inserted directly into a track via the CONTROLLER and
EVENT LIST views. Note that SCALE operates only on the whole part of the tempo,
i.e. if the tempo is 179.53, SCALE will affect the value 179, and leave .53
unchanged.
All SYNC and PERFORMANCE OPTIONS are saved as global settings in EZPRO.INI,
instead of being saved with the song. This is more convenient, particularly in
live performance situations. The "Open Notepad" option on the PERFORMANCE OPTIONS
is saved on a per song basis, however.
DEFAULTS MENU: USE SMPTE TIMES is a new option that causes SMPTE Times to be
used instead of the BAR.BEAT.CLOCK format. To change a displayed value, you
enter a new time in SMPTE format. This is particularly noticable in the EVENT
LIST (event times), and the MARKER window (markers). Other functions that are
affected include STEP ENTRY, PUNCH IN, PASTE, and MUSICAL LOCATION,
EDIT MENU: PASTE has three new options:
* Add the contents of an edit buffer at the current location.
* Mix an edit buffer with existing MIDI information.
* Replace a phrase with an edit buffer.
TOOLS MENU: Any SYSTEM EXCLUSIVE location in the LIBRARIAN can be saved to disk
as a MIDIEX file. Use this feature to store sounds from a MIDI device that you
will use for several different songs, or to swap sounds via a electronic bulletin
board, or BBS.
